Stockholm, July 29 - Swedish defence manufacturer Saab announced a major SEK 10.1 billion, or US$1.04 billion, contract from an undisclosed Middle Eastern country to deliver two GlobalEye airborne early warning and control aircraft by 2030. This highly classified procurement represents a pivotal milestone in regional air defence modernization and military intelligence gathering capabilities.
Equipped with an Erieye Extended Range active electronically scanned array radar, the platform provides persistent multi-domain surveillance from high altitude. Built on the ultra-long-range Bombardier jet, GlobalEye fuses S-band radar data with maritime and electro-optical sensors, transforming real-time information into actionable battle management across air, sea, and land operational commands.
Operating at 35,000 feet, the system detects low-altitude airborne threats, including cruise missiles and drones, beyond 450 kilometers. Extended operational endurance exceeding eleven hours allows sustained airborne orbits, expanding early detection horizons and providing commanders critical decision time against complex aerial attacks across contested and congested Gulf airspace operational environments.
While market analysts point to regional powers such as Saudi Arabia or Qatar as probable buyers, the strategic impact remains clear. Incorporating these advanced command-and-control aircraft into existing military architectures significantly reshapes the regional power balance, strengthening air defence integration and long-range threat tracking throughout the strategic Middle East region.
