Ankara, July 28 - Turkey is preparing to deploy five F-16 fighter jets and seventy-six military personnel to Estonia for NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission. Stationed at Ämari Air Base, the Turkish contingent will safeguard regional airspace from August through November. This tactical deployment reinforces collective deterrence along NATO’s eastern flank amid heightened concerns.
The incoming Turkish forces belong to the 181st Jet Squadron, known as the Pars Squadron, originating from Diyarbakır’s 8th Main Jet Base Command. Replacing an outgoing Portuguese detachment, the aircrews will maintain continuous quick reaction alert readiness. They stand ready to intercept unidentified aircraft and respond rapidly to airspace violations.
Because Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania lack native supersonic jet fighters suitable for defensive patrols, NATO allies conduct rotating deployments to secure Baltic skies. Turkey’s participation highlights its operational commitment to collective defense and seamless interoperability. The effort relies on integrated support teams, including mechanics, control tower staff, and mission planners.
This rotation marks Turkey’s second Baltic Air Policing tour, following an earlier 2006 deployment to Lithuania. Having completed similar air defense operations in Poland and Romania, Ankara continues demonstrating dedication to alliance security. Looking ahead, Turkish forces are scheduled for another NATO air policing assignment in Romania later this year.
