Bucharest, March 12 - Romania has agreed to permit the United States to utilize its military bases in support of operations related to Iran, marking a significant development in NATO alliance cooperation amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. On March 11, 2026, following deliberations by Romania's Supreme Council of National Defense and subsequent parliamentary approval, President Nicusor Dan announced the decision to allow the temporary deployment of U.S. military assets. This arrangement focuses primarily on logistical and defensive support, including aerial refueling aircraft, surveillance systems, and satellite communications equipment. Officials emphasized that the deployed resources carry no munitions and serve a strictly defensive purpose, enhancing overall security for both nations while aligning with existing bilateral defense frameworks.

The agreement centers on key facilities such as the Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base near the Black Sea coast and Campia Turzii in central Romania, with an initial authorization period of 90 days. Reports indicate the potential deployment of several hundred additional U.S. troops, up to 400 at each site, alongside specialized aircraft to facilitate refueling for missions in the region. This move builds on Romania's longstanding role as a strategic partner to the United States within NATO, where American forces have maintained a presence since 1999. The Mihail Kogalniceanu base, in particular, has served as a critical hub for previous operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and is undergoing major expansions funded by Romanian authorities to position it as one of Europe's largest military installations by 2040.

This decision underscores Romania's commitment to collective defense and transatlantic security partnerships, especially in light of broader geopolitical challenges. Romania already hosts the U.S.-operated Aegis Ashore ballistic missile defense system at Deveselu, which has been integrated into NATO's framework and recently updated to address evolving threats. By granting access for these support activities, Bucharest reinforces its strategic importance on NATO's eastern flank, contributing to regional stability and deterrence. The parliamentary vote reflected strong backing, with the majority approving the measure despite some opposition, highlighting Romania's alignment with U.S. priorities in addressing security concerns involving Iran.

The agreement reflects deepening U.S.-Romania military ties and provides the United States with valuable forward basing options for sustained operations in the Middle East. As a NATO ally, Romania's participation ensures interoperability and rapid response capabilities while bolstering deterrence against potential adversaries. This development is expected to strengthen bilateral relations and contribute to shared objectives in promoting international security, with both governments describing the arrangement as a defensive enhancement rather than an offensive escalation. The temporary nature of the deployment allows flexibility as the situation evolves.
