Moscow, June 22 - The Russian Aerospace Forces have intensified operations by deploying Su-34 strike fighters to conduct precision glide bomb attacks targeting Ukraine’s forward drone control points. On June 20, pilots used FAB-500 aerial bombs to destroy UAV control facilities of two National Guard brigades in Dobropolye and Kucherov Yar in the Donetsk People’s Republic. Additional strikes with three FAB-1500 bombs equipped with universal planning and correction modules hit a temporary deployment point of Ukraine’s 81st separate airmobile brigade in Nikolayevka. These actions were confirmed by Russian unmanned aircraft footage, highlighting the effectiveness of Su-34 platforms in frontline support roles.
Su-34 long-range strike fighters stand out for their high weapons payload, advanced electronic warfare systems, and low frontal radar cross-section, making them ideal for sustained glide bomb missions. Russian forces prioritize neutralizing drone command nodes, as this approach proves far simpler than intercepting swarms of UAVs. The deployment underscores ongoing enhancements in Russian air operations amid the conflict in Ukraine.
In late 2025, Su-34 units integrated very long-range glide bombs capable of reaching up to 193 kilometers, a significant leap from earlier 80-kilometer variants introduced in 2023. This advancement enables low-cost, mass strikes deep behind Ukrainian lines while minimizing risks to aircraft. Ukrainian intelligence officials have acknowledged the potential of these munitions to reshape battlefield dynamics through extended standoff capabilities.
Mass glide bomb employment has placed immense pressure on Ukrainian positions, with frontline reports describing devastating impacts on fortified bunkers. The sustained use of these weapons contributes to high casualty rates in Ukrainian units and shapes the broader operational environment in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Su-34 glide bomb attacks continue to play a pivotal role in degrading Ukraine’s drone-dependent capabilities.
