Sicily, January 11 - Italy is advancing its strategic role in the F-35 Lightning II program by establishing Europe’s first F-35 training center at Trapani-Birgi Air Base in Sicily. The Italian Ministry of Defense has approved an investment of approximately €112.6 million (roughly $130 million) to develop this multinational F-35 pilot training facility, marking a significant milestone as the first dedicated pilot school for the fifth-generation fighter outside the United States. This initiative responds to the expanding F-35 fleets across NATO and European partner nations, where demand for qualified pilots has outpaced existing training capacity centered primarily at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.
The new Lightning Training Center will transform Trapani-Birgi into Italy’s third operational base for the F-35, alongside Amendola and Ghedi air bases, which already host the Italian Air Force’s frontline squadrons. Overseen by the F-35 Joint Program Office and manufacturer Lockheed Martin, with support from Italian defense company Leonardo, the project builds on Italy’s established contributions to the program, including the Final Assembly and Check-Out facility at Cameri. Construction and preparation activities are now moving forward, positioning the Sicilian base as a key hub for both national operations and international instruction open to allied countries participating in the Joint Strike Fighter initiative.
Initial training capabilities, including ground-based instruction, are scheduled to come online by December 2028, with the full F-35 training center expected to achieve operational status by July 2029. This timeline aligns with the growing need for standardized, accessible pilot preparation as more European air forces integrate the F-35A and other variants into their inventories. By hosting this facility, Italy aims to reduce reliance on transatlantic training deployments, enhance interoperability among NATO allies, and strengthen its leadership position within the multinational program.
The establishment of Europe’s first F-35 training center underscores Italy’s commitment to fifth-generation airpower and collective defense. As the F-35 Lightning II continues to become the backbone of modern tactical aviation across the continent, this new Sicilian hub will play a pivotal role in training the next generation of pilots, ensuring readiness and technological superiority for allied forces in an evolving security environment.
