Delta CEO Warns of Continued Flight Disruptions

Delta Air Lines is facing a protracted battle to recover from a global cyber outage that has wreaked havoc on its operations. CEO Ed Bastian has cautioned passengers that the airline will continue to experience significant flight disruptions for at least the next few days. The Atlanta-based carrier has been hit particularly hard by the incident, which was triggered by a software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.

The update caused widespread system failures for Microsoft customers, including numerous airlines. Since Friday, Delta has canceled over 4,000 flights, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. In stark contrast to other major US carriers that have largely restored normal operations, Delta continues to grapple with the fallout. Monday alone saw over 800 cancellations, representing a staggering 21% of the airline’s scheduled flights. This figure accounts for nearly half of all flight cancellations nationwide.

In a message to employees, Bastian and Chief Information Officer Rahul Samant acknowledged the immense challenges facing the airline and reassured staff of the company’s commitment to restoring normal operations as quickly as possible. While the situation remains dire, the CEO expressed cautious optimism that the airline would gradually improve its performance in the coming days.

“Today will be a better day than yesterday,” Bastian said, “and hopefully Tuesday and Wednesday will be that much better again.” As Delta works tirelessly to rectify the situation, passengers are advised to expect ongoing delays and cancellations. The airline has urged customers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport and to allow extra time for travel.
