Airbus A321XLR Receives EASA Type Certification, Paving the Way for Commercial Service

The Airbus A321XLR, powered by CFM LEAP-1A engines, has received its Type Certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), marking a significant milestone in the aircraft's development. This certification paves the way for the entry-into-service of the new aircraft at the end of the summer, with the first deliveries expected to begin soon.

The Type Certificate was handed over by Florian Guillermet, Executive Director of EASA, to Isabelle Bloy, A321XLR Chief Engineer, during a ceremony in Cologne, Germany. This achievement is the culmination of years of development and testing, and it represents a major step forward for Airbus and the aviation industry as a whole. The A321XLR is a game-changer for airlines, offering a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles (8,700 km), which is 15% more than the A321LR and 30% more than the A321neo. This extended range allows airlines to operate on longer routes, opening up new possibilities for direct flights between cities that were previously not feasible.

The aircraft's increased range is made possible by the addition of a new rear center fuel tank, which allows for an additional 12,900 liters of fuel. This tank is integrated into the fuselage and is designed to meet the highest safety standards, including a new set of requirements for fire protection. In addition to its extended range, the A321XLR also features a number of other enhancements, including a new Airspace cabin that provides passengers with a more comfortable and enjoyable flying experience. The aircraft also offers 30% lower fuel burn per seat than previous generation competitor aircraft, making it an environmentally friendly option for airlines.

The first A321XLR is expected to be delivered to Iberia in the third quarter, with more deliveries to follow in the coming months. The aircraft is set to enter service later this summer, and it is expected to be a popular choice for airlines looking to expand their route networks and offer more direct flights to their customers. The A321XLR's certification by EASA is a significant achievement for Airbus, and it represents a major step forward in the company's efforts to provide innovative and efficient aircraft to its customers. With its extended range, enhanced cabin, and improved environmental performance, the A321XLR is poised to become a popular choice for airlines around the world.
