Airline Azul Initiates Its First Argentina Flight Since 2020

For the first time since the pandemic-induced travel disruptions in 2020, Azul, a Brazilian airline, is resuming its operations to Argentina this year. On June 30, Azul plans to initiate a seasonal route that links the Viracopos airport near Sao Paulo to Bariloche, a popular winter spot in Argentina's Patagonia region. This route will be serviced by four flights per week, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

Due to Argentina's weak peso resulting from a severe economic crisis, it has become more affordable for Brazilians to travel there. Government data from Argentina indicates that travel from Brazil increased by 75% in 2023 through November, with 1.27 million Brazilians visiting the country. Azul's competitor, Gol, has also recently capitalized on this high demand by offering seasonal flights to Argentina from various Brazilian cities.

Azul's manager, Vitor Silva, stated that the new route is intended to give customers an additional destination choice for their July holidays. He emphasized that while Azul excels in domestic flights, it continues to invest in expanding its international destinations. In December, Azul announced its purchase of seven Airbus A330neo wide-body aircraft to significantly boost its international flights, with deliveries set to commence in 2026. The airline currently operates flights to several international destinations, including Paris, Lisbon, Curacao, various cities in Uruguay, and Fort Lauderdale and Orlando in Florida.

Last month, Azul's Chief Executive, John Rodgerson, hinted at the possibility of returning to Argentina with the seasonal Bariloche flight but did not provide further details at that time. Azul has now confirmed that the route will be serviced by an Airbus A320 aircraft, which can accommodate up to 174 passengers. Tickets for this route will be available for purchase from Tuesday.
