Air Combat Escalates in Russian-Ukrainian Conflict With More Downed Jets

Over the weekend, both Russian and Ukrainian military officials reported that they had successfully shot down enemy aircraft in different sections of their 1,000-km (621-mile) warfront, which has been ongoing for the past 22 months. On Sunday, Mykola Oleshchuk, the commander of Ukraine's air force, stated that Ukrainian anti-aircraft units had hit a Russian Su-34 fighter bomber near Mariupol, a city in southern Ukraine on the Sea of Azov that is currently under Russian control.

Although Oleshchuk didn't provide any additional information, he did mention on Telegram that the aircraft did not return to its base. Earlier, the Russian Defence Ministry had reported that its air defense systems had downed four Ukrainian military aircraft within the last 24 hours. This report came just two days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced that Kyiv had shot down three Russian aircraft.
