AirAsia, a budget airline, will begin flying from Penang to Hong Kong on August 10, 2023. This will be the airline's seventh direct international route from Penang and is expected to boost tourism to the state. AirAsia will operate three weekly flights on this route, adding to the 217 flights it already operates from Penang to other destinations.
AirAsia Malaysia CEO Riad Asmat said the airline was excited to resume flights between Penang and Hong Kong, which were previously suspended in 2009. He said AirAsia was the only low-cost carrier operating this route, and that it would offer more value and convenience to passengers.
AirAsia has the largest international connectivity from Penang, with a market share of 40%. The new route is part of AirAsia's plan to expand its reach beyond Southeast Asia and to support economic growth through tourism.
AirAsia is offering promotional fares on this route starting from RM299 one-way for travel between August 10 and October 26, 2024.
