AirAsia records growth in passenger demand during final quarter of 2021

AirAsia Group observed an increase in air travel demand during the fourth quarter of 2021, according to its preliminary statistics released on January 27, 2022.

According to AirAsia Group, the airline recorded the highest quarterly load factor and capacity since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, which reached 80% and 3.4 million, respectively.

AirAsia Philippines, AirAsia Indonesia, and AirAsia Malaysia carried a combined total of 2.7 million passengers in Q4 2021, an increase compared to 1.3 million passengers during the same period in 2020.

Meanwhile, AirAsia Thailand operated more domestic capacity than in the previous quarter, on the back of robust demand during the fourth quarter of 2021. AirAsia Thailand carried a total of 1.1 million passengers during the last quarter of 2021.

The positive quarterly results were largely attributed to a gradual ease of travel restrictions in East and Southeast Asia.

However, full-year operating results for 2021 showed that passengers numbers had decreased by 64% compared to 2020. In 2021, the airline group carried a total of 4.8 million passengers, a noticeable decline when compared to 13.3 million passengers in 2020.
