Ankara, July 9 - At the NATO Summit Defence Forum in Ankara, Türkiye, the governments of Belgium, Croatia, France, Poland, Spain, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom launched a High Visibility Project for the Airbus A400M. This landmark initiative signals a major step forward in European defence collaboration, aiming to establish a multinational A400M fleet that will strengthen collective strategic airlift capabilities. By building directly on the proven model of the Multinational MRTT Fleet (MMF), the project addresses critical capability gaps among European NATO allies. It promotes deeper integration in air mobility, ensuring participating nations can respond more effectively to shared security challenges while optimising resources through joint procurement and operations.
The multinational A400M fleet initiative centres on a pooling and sharing strategy that envisions progressive stages of cooperation. These range from a jointly owned and operated fleet of Airbus A400M aircraft to integrated support services, including maintenance, training, infrastructure development, and procurement activities. This end-to-end approach will deliver greater operational flexibility and cost efficiencies, enabling nations to meet both national and NATO requirements more effectively. Enhanced capabilities will include air-to-air refuelling, disaster relief missions, medical evacuation, and firefighting operations. With over 135 A400M aircraft already in service worldwide and more than 270,000 flight hours accumulated, the tactical airlifter has established itself as the backbone of air mobility for major European NATO members. Its ongoing capability roadmap ensures it will remain essential for decades ahead.
This new A400M project draws inspiration from the success of the MMF programme, which has operated Airbus A330 Multirole Tanker Transport aircraft since 2020. The MMF provides participating countries with exclusive access to NATO-owned assets in a highly efficient pooling arrangement, delivering commonality, reduced costs, and seamless interoperability across the Atlantic. It exemplifies best practices in European defence cooperation. In parallel with the A400M announcement, Finland has officially joined the MMF, bringing the total number of participating nations to nine: the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Czechia, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. The programme currently operates nine A330 MRTTs from a total order of twelve, with deployments supporting NATO’s Eastern Flank, Afghan evacuations, and Indo-Pacific exercises.
The announcement highlights the strong partnership between NATO, participating nations, and industry leader Airbus in advancing innovative defence solutions. By pooling resources, European allies gain reliable access to state-of-the-art strategic airlift capabilities while reinforcing sovereignty in critical areas. This multinational A400M fleet project demonstrates how collaborative models can effectively address evolving security demands through shared investment and operational excellence. As defence priorities shift, such initiatives will play a pivotal role in enhancing NATO’s collective resilience and readiness across multiple mission profiles.
