Farnborough, July 23 - Lorenzo Mariani, chief executive officer of Italian defense contractor Leonardo, stated that any prospective country seeking to join the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) must formalize its entry within twelve months. Speaking at the Farnborough Airshow, Mariani emphasized that the deadline for expanding the international fighter jet partnership should fall at the end of 2026.
The ambitious defense initiative currently unites Great Britain, Italy, and Japan in a joint effort to construct an advanced stealth combat aircraft. Major industrial contributors, including BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, remain fully committed to meeting the critical project target of operational deployment by the year 2035.
Speculation regarding potential coalition expansion has increased as global security requirements evolve rapidly. Germany is viewed as a highly suitable prospective partner due to strong military expenditures and existing aerospace collaborations, while Saudi Arabia continues expressing interest, and Canada recently joined the expanding framework in an official observer role.
Although political choices rest with national governments, industry leaders stress that project deadlines require swift resolution.
