Ellsworth AFB Emerges as First Home for B-21 Raider Stealth Bomber Operations

AeroNewsJournal

Discover how Ellsworth AFB becomes the first operational base for the B-21 Raider stealth bomber, boosting U.S. Air Force long-range strike and deterrence.

Box Elder, SD, June 7 - The U.S. Air Force just made things official: Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota is set to lead the charge as the first operational home for the B-21 Raider stealth bomber. This isn’t just another plane; the B-21 is at the heart of America’s long-range strike strategy and nuclear deterrence. Built to slip past advanced enemy defenses and strike with incredible precision, it can carry both conventional and nuclear weapons. Ellsworth itself is going through a $2 billion modernization blitz, quickly turning into a high-tech hub designed for the B-21’s one-of-a-kind stealth needs. The move sends a clear signal: the Air Force isn’t letting up when it comes to staying ahead of threats from global rivals.

When Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink visited from June 30 to July 1, 2026, he walked through the first completed facilities for the B-21 team, namely, a $161 million Low Observable Restoration Facility and an $81 million Wash Rack and General Maintenance Hangar. These aren’t just any hangars; they’ll keep the B-21’s stealth coatings and sensitive tech ready for action while the base still supports the B-1B Lancer fleet. Ellsworth isn’t just the main site, either; it’s also picked as the Formal Training Unit, set to receive the very first operational B-21 in 2027 and speeding up the rollout of this next-gen bomber.

The B-21 Raider itself is a leap forward, picking up where older bombers left off but adding extra punch: better survivability, longer range, and more flexible payload options. Northrop Grumman designed it to handle tough, long-haul missions without breaking the bank, even in the most dangerous skies. The new infrastructure at Ellsworth- specialized hangars, maintenance bays, you name it, fits perfectly with what the B-21 needs to stay hidden and ready. This isn’t just about Ellsworth, though. What’s getting built here will serve as the blueprint for other bases getting the B-21 soon, like Whiteman in Missouri and Dyess in Texas.

So, as the Air Force gears up for the B-21’s debut, Ellsworth is turning into a real symbol of forward-thinking defense. The base boosts America’s muscle to strike far and fast, stopping threats before they start. With production speeding up and tests on track, the B-21 fleet is on its way, and it’s going to set the standard for air power for years ahead. All of this shows the country is doubling down on game-changing tech to protect its freedom and keep the future secure, no matter how complicated the world gets.
