Uppsala, Sweden, May 29 - In a landmark boost to Ukraine's air defense capabilities amid ongoing conflict, Sweden has confirmed that Kyiv will purchase up to 20 advanced Saab Gripen E/F fighter jets while receiving 16 older Gripen C/D models as a donation much sooner than anticipated. This dual-track agreement strengthens Ukraine's fighter fleet with cost-effective, high-performance multirole aircraft renowned for their agility, advanced radar systems, and ability to operate from short runways. The deal, financed partly through a €2.5 billion EU Ukraine Support Loan for the new jets, marks a significant step in modernizing Ukraine's air force against regional threats.
The donated Gripen C/D aircraft are set for delivery as early as 2027, providing immediate operational enhancements including integration with Meteor air-to-air missiles and comprehensive training support. Meanwhile, the new Gripen E/F variants, featuring superior electronic warfare capabilities and extended range, will begin arriving from 2030. This timeline acceleration underscores Sweden's commitment to bolstering Ukraine's defense, allowing pilots already in training to transition faster to these versatile platforms ideal for both air superiority and ground attack missions.
Experts highlight the Gripen's strategic value in contested airspace, offering a reliable alternative to heavier fighters with lower operating costs and high availability rates. The acquisition aligns with broader efforts to secure long-term air superiority, potentially paving the way for additional Gripen purchases as Ukraine rebuilds its aviation strength. Sweden's proactive support, including maintenance packages and ammunition, ensures sustained readiness for these fighter jets in high-intensity operations.
This development not only enhances Ukraine's deterrence posture but also reinforces Nordic-European solidarity in defense cooperation. As deliveries progress, the influx of Gripen jets is expected to play a pivotal role in protecting Ukrainian skies and supporting ground forces, contributing to a more robust aerial defense strategy in the years ahead.
