Everett, May 11 - The first production Boeing 777-9 has taken to the skies from Everett's Paine Field, marking a pivotal milestone for the 777X program and bringing Lufthansa's highly anticipated delivery closer. On May 7, Boeing pilots successfully completed the maiden flight of the customer-configured aircraft, which lasted three hours and 27 minutes over Washington and Oregon. This test validated the jet's systems and structures ahead of further certification efforts. As Europe's largest airline and a launch customer for the Boeing 777X family, Lufthansa stands poised to receive this advanced widebody, reinforcing its commitment to fleet modernization with state-of-the-art aircraft designed for superior efficiency and passenger comfort.

This Boeing 777-9, bearing serial number 1781 and temporary registration N20080, features a fully outfitted passenger cabin tailored to Lufthansa specifications, including premium seating, economy configurations, and advanced in-flight entertainment systems. Unlike earlier test aircraft, this production model establishes the baseline for future deliveries, incorporating the innovative folding wingtips, composite wings, and powerful GE9X engines that define the 777X. The flight performed as expected, contributing to the program's accumulated total of more than 4,700 flight test hours. Boeing plans to apply full Lufthansa livery to the aircraft before handover, setting the stage for rigorous cabin and connectivity testing in the coming weeks.

Lufthansa holds firm orders for 20 Boeing 777-9 aircraft as part of its long-haul strategy to replace aging 747-400 models. The 777-9 promises up to 20 percent lower fuel consumption and emissions compared to previous-generation jets, along with a quieter operation and enhanced cabin experience featuring larger windows and a wider fuselage. With global orders for the 777X family exceeding 620 aircraft, this first production flight underscores Boeing's progress toward type certification in 2026 and initial customer deliveries targeted for 2027. The milestone arrives as Lufthansa celebrates its centenary, highlighting the airline's role in pioneering next-generation widebody technology for transatlantic and long-range routes.
