Shanghai, January 24 - The COMAC C919-600 high-altitude variant has been spotted in Shanghai, signaling the next phase of China’s ambitious commercial aviation program. The aircraft, a shortened version of the C919 narrowbody jet, was seen undergoing ground preparations at COMAC’s facility, marking a significant milestone as it moves closer to its maiden flight tests. This development underscores China’s determination to expand the capabilities of its homegrown airliner family, with the C919-600 specifically designed to meet the operational challenges of plateau regions where thinner air and demanding conditions require specialized performance.

The C919-600, often referred to as the “Plateau” variant, represents a strategic evolution of the C919 program. By shortening the airframe and adapting systems for high-altitude operations, COMAC aims to provide airlines with a reliable solution for routes across western China and other regions with similar environmental demands. The aircraft’s development was first outlined during the Shanghai International Commercial Airshow in 2023, where COMAC revealed plans for both shortened and stretched versions of the C919. The high-altitude model is expected to serve carriers such as Tibet Airlines, which require aircraft capable of safe and efficient operations in airports located at elevations exceeding 3,000 meters.

Technically, the C919-600 incorporates structural modifications and performance enhancements to ensure stability and efficiency in rarefied air conditions. Key components, including the outer wing box manufactured by AVIC Xi’an Aircraft Industry Corporation, have already passed inspection by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), confirming readiness for flight testing. This certification milestone highlights COMAC’s progress in adhering to international safety standards while advancing indigenous aerospace technology. The program remains on schedule, with a first flight targeted for 2027 and commercial service anticipated by 2028, positioning the C919-600 as a competitive option in the global narrowbody market.
