Qatar Airways 777 Pilots Request Longer Runway at JFK Airport Due to Landing Gear Issue


New York, August 7 - A Qatar Airways Boeing 777-300ER, on August 4, 2025, operating as flight QR703 from Doha’s Hamad International Airport to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, encountered a critical situation that underscored the importance of precise communication and infrastructure adequacy in aviation. The aircraft, registered as A7-BAC, was nearing U.S. airspace when the flight crew detected low pressure in one of the main landing gear tires. Recognizing the potential impact on braking performance, the pilots promptly contacted Boston Center, the regional air traffic control overseeing that airspace, to request landing on JFK’s longest runway, Runway 4L, which measures 12,079 feet. The pilots provided critical details, including the number of people on board and the remaining fuel, 17,400 pounds, ensuring all factors were considered for a safe landing.
