Kuala Lumpur, May 16 - In a striking display of creativity and national pride, the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) has unveiled a newly liveried Sukhoi Su-30MKM fighter jet, christened "Toruk Makto," ahead of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA '25). This bold design draws inspiration from the legendary creature in James Cameron's blockbuster film Avatar, known as the Toruk or "The Last Shadow." The livery, revealed in May 2025, transforms the advanced multirole fighter into a visual spectacle, blending cutting-edge aerospace technology with cultural symbolism to captivate audiences at the upcoming exhibition.

The Su-30MKM, a 4.5-generation supermaneuverable fighter, is a cornerstone of Malaysia’s air defense capabilities. Developed by Russia’s Sukhoi Design Bureau and based on the Su-30MKI operated by the Indian Air Force, the aircraft boasts a formidable array of features, including thrust-vectoring engines, a digital fly-by-wire system, and a payload capacity of up to 8,000 kg. Its avionics suite, tailored for Malaysian requirements, integrates systems from Russian, French, and South African manufacturers, such as Thales’ Head-up Display and Damocles targeting pod, alongside Avitronics’ missile approach warning sensors. Capable of carrying advanced weaponry like the GBU-12 Paveway laser-guided bomb, the Su-30MKM is a versatile platform for air superiority, ground attack, and suppression of enemy air defenses. Malaysia operates 18 of these jets, based at RMAF Gong Kedak in Terengganu, under the 11th Squadron.
The "Toruk Makto" livery elevates the aircraft’s presence beyond its technical prowess. In Avatar, the Toruk is a fearsome aerial predator, and the title "Toruk Makto" is bestowed upon those rare individuals who can tame and ride it—a feat requiring exceptional skill, courage, and a pure spirit. The RMAF has drawn a parallel between this fictional narrative and the real-world demands of piloting the Su-30MKM. The aircraft, described as an "iron beast," requires pilots of extraordinary mental and moral fortitude to master its complex systems and execute high-stakes missions. The livery’s design, inspired by the Toruk’s vibrant and imposing aesthetic, reflects this synergy of technological might and human virtue, symbolizing the RMAF’s commitment to safeguarding Malaysia’s sovereignty.
This unveiling comes at a significant moment for the Su-30MKM fleet. In January 2025, the RMAF completed a comprehensive service life extension program (SLEP) led by Aerospace Technology Systems Corporation (ATSC), ensuring the jets remain operational for at least another decade. The program addressed past challenges, such as spare parts shortages that grounded much of the fleet in 2018, and incorporated upgrades like advanced multi-function displays from India’s Samtel Avionics. The revitalized fleet, showcased through the "Toruk Makto" livery, underscores Malaysia’s strategic focus on maintaining a robust air force amid regional geopolitical complexities. Set to take center stage at LIMA ’25, the "Toruk Makto" Su-30MKM will not only demonstrate the RMAF’s operational readiness but also serve as a cultural ambassador, merging cinematic inspiration with military excellence. As the jet soars over Langkawi, its striking appearance will highlight Malaysia’s ability to blend innovation, artistry, and defense prowess on a global stage.
