LIMA 25 Targets 350,000 Visitors to Langkawi

Langkawi, May 15 - The Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA ’25), scheduled to take place from May 20 to 24, 2025, is poised to be a landmark event for Malaysia’s tourism and defense sectors, with the Kedah state government targeting an ambitious 350,000 visitors to the island of Langkawi. This biennial exhibition, now in its 17th edition, has solidified its reputation as one of Southeast Asia’s premier maritime and aerospace showcases since its inception in 1991. Themed “Today’s Progress, Future Achievements,” LIMA ’25 promises a spectacular display of cutting-edge technology, breathtaking aerial performances, and a significant boost to the local economy.

The event is expected to draw a diverse crowd, including industry professionals, defense officials, and tourists eager to witness the impressive lineup of over 100 aircraft and 35 naval vessels. The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) has already commenced rigorous flight training, with exercises conducted in two phases: the first from May 6 to 13 in the airspace of Alor Setar, Kedah, and Butterworth, Penang, and the second from May 14 to 19 in Langkawi’s airspace. These preparations ensure that the airshows, scheduled from May 20 to 24, will deliver high-octane performances featuring fighter jets, carriers, and helicopters. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) will also showcase vessels such as KM Tun Fatimah, KM Langkawi, and KM Gagah, highlighting the maritime segment’s strength.

LIMA ’25 is not just a display of military might; it is a catalyst for tourism and economic growth in Langkawi. The Kedah government’s target of 350,000 visitors reflects the event’s growing global appeal, with some sources even estimating a potential 400,000 attendees. To accommodate this influx, logistical preparations are in full swing. Over 40,000 round-trip ferry tickets have already been sold for travel between Kuala Kedah, Kuala Perlis, and Langkawi, prompting operators to add 100 extra trips to meet demand. Hotels and registered car rental services on the island are fully booked, signaling a significant economic windfall for local businesses. A dedicated control center will manage passenger flow, and online ticketing through platforms like the Cuti-Cuti Langkawi app has been encouraged to streamline the visitor experience.

The exhibition’s appeal is further enhanced by its international participation, with aerobatic teams like Indonesia’s Jupiters confirmed to perform. The event also serves as a platform for geopolitical and technological showcases, with advanced aircraft like Russia’s Su-57 ‘Felon’ making its regional debut. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, organizers have implemented strict measures, including a ban on smoking and vaping at event venues and efforts to control stray dogs on the island. With 70% of logistical arrangements completed two weeks prior, LIMA’25 is on track to be a world-class event, reinforcing Langkawi’s status as a global tourism and defense hub.
