Lufthansa Innovation Hub Deploys Autonomous Robots at Munich Airport Terminal 2

Munich, April 20 - Lufthansa Innovation Hub (LIH), the innovation branch of the Lufthansa Group based in Berlin, is teaming up with Munich Airport's Terminal 2 to introduce robots that can operate independently. This plan, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), is set to incorporate the latest technology at one of Europe’s top airports. Starting in April 2025, two self-driving robots from the U.S. company Ottonomy will be working in Terminal 2, particularly in the gate areas and the baggage claim section. These robots, named Ottobots, aim to improve customer service, promote Lufthansa’s services, and bring new innovations to the aviation sector.

This initiative results from cooperation between LIH and Munich Airport Terminal 2, managed jointly by Lufthansa and Munich Airport. The agreement focuses on addressing significant challenges in aviation, such as improving operations, enhancing passenger experience, and prioritizing sustainability. Through LIH’s Startup Gate initiative, which connects Lufthansa with cutting-edge startups, this partnership allows for testing new technologies in real airport environments. The Ottobots, powered by Contextual AI, navigate busy terminals using sensors to avoid obstacles and interact naturally with passengers. This technology has been proven in hospitals and delivery systems and is now adapted for public terminal use in Germany for the first time.

Passengers can access various services by scanning a QR code on the Ottobots. This takes them to Lufthansa’s digital chat assistant, enabling them to find flight information, rebook flights, request refunds, or get tax refund details and lost item services. These robots have built-in compartments, indicating they might soon offer additional conveniences like distributing bottled water or carrying small items. By handling routine questions and tasks, the Ottobots aim to reduce wait times, allowing airport staff to focus on more complex needs.

Munich Airport’s Terminal 2 is a leader in technology, featuring innovations like automated passport control and luggage drop-off systems. Introducing Ottobots aligns with the terminal's commitment to providing excellent service through digitalization and automation. This pilot project not only tests the functionality of the robots but also assesses passenger acceptance of this technology, offering vital data for future strategies. The collaboration encourages LIH and Munich Airport to share knowledge and pursue additional innovative projects with startups to drive forward aviation. This project is part of a larger goal to transform the travel experience with technology. Dr. Stefan Nothelfer, a senior director at LIH, mentioned that the partnership aims to optimize operations and increase customer satisfaction throughout their journey. Similarly, Matthias Langbehn, the managing director of Terminal 2 Company, stressed the importance of innovative partners like LIH in maintaining the terminal’s high standards. As the Ottobots draw attention in Terminal 2, this collaboration indicates a future where robots and AI play a central role in creating seamless, efficient airport experiences focused on passengers.
