Taipei, 2 April - China Airlines, the flag carrier of Taiwan, has officially confirmed a significant step in its fleet modernization and expansion strategy by finalizing an order for ten Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. This agreement, signed with Airbus, marks the culmination of a commitment initially announced in December 2024, reinforcing the airline’s dedication to enhancing its long-haul operations and improving passenger experience. The new aircraft, expected to be delivered by 2029, will bolster China Airlines’ capabilities on key international routes, particularly to North America and Europe, while aligning with its goals of sustainability and operational efficiency.

The A350-1000, a member of Airbus’ advanced A350 family, is renowned for its cutting-edge technology and exceptional performance. Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, the aircraft offers a range of approximately 8,900 nautical miles, making it ideal for the ultra-long-haul flights that China Airlines plans to operate. This extended range, combined with a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft, positions the A350-1000 as a cornerstone of the airline’s environmental strategy. With a capacity to carry between 346 and 348 passengers in a typical three-class configuration, the aircraft also promises enhanced comfort, featuring wider cabins, larger windows, and state-of-the-art in-flight amenities.
This order builds on China Airlines’ existing relationship with Airbus, as the carrier already operates a fleet of 15 A350-900s on its long-haul routes. The operational commonality between the A350-900 and A350-1000 models is a key advantage, allowing the airline to streamline pilot training, maintenance, and overall fleet management. This synergy is expected to drive cost efficiencies while maintaining the high standards of service that China Airlines is known for. The airline also operates other Airbus models, including the A321neo and A330, further solidifying its partnership with the European manufacturer.
Kao Shing-Hwang, Chairman of China Airlines, emphasized the strategic importance of this investment, noting that the A350-1000’s superior range, fuel efficiency, and passenger comfort will play a pivotal role in transforming the airline’s long-haul network. The addition of these aircraft is seen as a proactive move to meet growing demand in the Asia-Pacific region, where the airline has reported double-digit growth. Meanwhile, Benoit de Saint-Exupery, Airbus’ Executive Vice President of Sales, welcomed China Airlines to the expanding group of A350-1000 operators, highlighting the airline’s pioneering role in adopting advanced aviation technology. Globally, the A350 family has proven its appeal, with over 1,360 orders from 60 airlines and more than 640 aircraft currently in service with 38 operators. For China Airlines, this order represents not just a fleet upgrade but a commitment to strengthening Taiwan’s connectivity with the world. As the airline prepares to integrate these next-generation jets, it is poised to elevate its position in the competitive long-haul market, offering passengers a superior travel experience while advancing its sustainability objectives.
