Vietnam Airlines to Seek Bids for 50 Narrowbody Jets in 2025

Vietnam Airlines, the national flag carrier, has announced its intention to issue requests for proposals (RFP) in 2025 for the acquisition of 50 narrowbody jets. This move is part of the airline's strategy to modernize and expand its fleet to meet the growing demand for air travel in one of Asia's fastest-growing aviation markets. The carrier's CEO, Le Hong Ha, confirmed the plans at an aviation industry event in Brunei, emphasizing Vietnam Airlines' commitment to enhancing its service offerings. The decision to purchase new aircraft comes after Vietnam Airlines had previously signed a provisional deal with Boeing for 50 737 MAX jets in 2023, which has yet to be finalized.

The bidding process will be open to all manufacturers, although Ha noted that Boeing has presented a "very good offer." This competition is not just between Western giants like Boeing and Airbus but also includes China's COMAC, which is eager to expand its footprint with its C919 model. Vietnam Airlines currently operates an all-Airbus narrowbody fleet, consisting of A321s and A320neos, alongside a mix of Airbus and Boeing widebody aircraft. The introduction of new narrowbody jets is anticipated to significantly boost the airline's capacity and efficiency, especially on domestic and regional routes where demand is expected to surge.

The airline's fleet expansion plan aligns with its broader vision of becoming a leading Asian airline by 2035, aiming to double its current fleet size. This expansion is also in response to Vietnam's burgeoning economy and its increasing role as a tourism and business hub in Southeast Asia. The bidding process will be crucial for Vietnam Airlines as it seeks not only to modernize its fleet but also to diversify its aircraft supplier base, potentially reducing dependency on any single manufacturer. The new aircraft are expected to feature the latest in fuel efficiency and passenger comfort, aligning with global trends toward more sustainable and customer-focused aviation.

As Vietnam Airlines prepares for this significant procurement, it underscores the airline's confidence in the future of air travel in the region. The decision will also have implications for the global aviation supply chain, with manufacturers competing to secure a lucrative contract from one of the fastest-growing markets. This development is a testament to Vietnam's economic growth and its increasing significance in the international aviation landscape.
