Qatar Airways Flight QR20 Diverts to Basra Due to Cabin Smoke

On July 20, 2024, a Qatar Airways Boeing 787-8, registered as A7-BCC, operating Flight QR20 from Dublin to Doha, declared an emergency and diverted to Basra, Iraq, due to smoke in the cabin. The flight was carrying 270 passengers at the time of the incident. The aircraft departed Dublin at approximately 08:15 UTC and was scheduled to arrive in Doha at 17:20 UTC. However, the crew declared an emergency during the flight and squawked 7700, indicating a general emergency. The aircraft then diverted to Basra, where it landed safely at approximately 16:03 UTC.

Passengers were reported to be safe and were waiting at the airport in Basra. A replacement Airbus A350-900 was dispatched to Basra to take the passengers on their onward journey to Doha. Early reports suggest that the reason for the emergency was due to smoke in the cabin. However, the exact cause of the smoke is still unknown. Qatar Airways has not released an official statement regarding the incident.
