In the latest development that can mark a new chapter in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will transfer Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets to Ukraine. The Mirage 2000-5 is a high-performance, multi-role combat aircraft developed by Dassault Aviation. Approximately 600 of these jets have been produced, with half of them exported to eight countries including Greece, the United Arab Emirates, and Taiwan⁴. The Mirage 2000-5 is an updated air defense variant with improved radar. It’s compatible with the Mica air-to-air missile as well as the Scalp cruise missiles that France has supplied to Ukraine.

The transfer of these fighter jets is part of a broader cooperation program between France and Ukraine. Alongside the transfer of the jets, France will also launch a pilot training program. The training will commence this summer and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The training of Ukrainian pilots will take place in France. The exact number of jets to be transferred has not been disclosed yet, but Macron has stated that France will give "the equivalent of what other nations give"³. The integration of a new type of aircraft into an existing fleet is a complex process that requires careful planning and coordination. It involves training pilots and maintenance crews, adjusting existing training programs, and ensuring a steady supply of spare parts and support equipment.

In addition to the transfer of jets and the training of pilots, France also plans to train and equip a brigade of 4,500 Ukrainian soldiers. Macron has stated that France and its allies are considering training soldiers on Ukrainian soil in response to a request by the embattled country. Macron has also clarified that Ukraine can use French arms to attack locations in Russia from where the country is being targeted. He argued that restricting such use would be equivalent to not allowing Ukrainians to defend themselves against being bombed. This move by France is seen as a significant step in supporting Ukraine in its ongoing conflict. It not only strengthens Ukraine's defense capabilities but also sends a strong message of solidarity and support from the international community. The transfer of Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets and the training of Ukrainian pilots and soldiers underscore France's commitment to stand with Ukraine in these challenging times.
