Romania Bolsters Emergency Response with Additional Black Hawk Helicopter

In a significant move to enhance its emergency and firefighting capabilities, Romania has signed a contract with PZL Mielec, a Lockheed Martin company, to procure an additional new-generation Black Hawk utility helicopter. This decision comes as part of Romania's ongoing efforts to strengthen its disaster preparedness and response capabilities. The new S-70M Black Hawk helicopter will join Romania's existing fleet of seven S-70M helicopters, which are currently used for maritime and land search and rescue, firefighting, transport, and medical emergency support. With this addition, Romania's Black Hawk fleet will grow to eight, further extending its reach and operational capabilities.

The acquisition of the additional Black Hawk helicopter is funded by European Union RescEU funds, which are part of the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations. These funds are specifically aimed at supporting the development of a fleet of firefighting planes and helicopters, among other items. Designed to meet demanding military standards, the S-70 Black Hawk helicopter is a versatile platform that is ideally suited to perform the long-range and high-altitude missions required by Romania's Ministry of Internal Affairs. Its dual-use nature makes it an effective tool for disaster relief, search and rescue, medical transport, and firefighting missions.

Earlier this year, Lockheed Martin and Aerostar S.A. inaugurated Europe's first certified S-70 Black Hawk helicopter maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) service center in Bacau. This facility will support the operational availability and sustainment of the Black Hawk fleet, ensuring that Romania's emergency services have the necessary tools and resources to respond effectively to crises.
