Emirates has made history by operating the world's first Airbus A380 flight powered entirely by Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This groundbreaking flight marks a major milestone in the aviation industry's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and move towards more sustainable practices.
SAF is a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional jet fuel, capable of reducing carbon emissions by up to 85%¹. The successful operation of an Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger aircraft, on 100% SAF demonstrates the viability of this renewable fuel in commercial airline engines. The Airbus A380 used for this landmark flight was powered by Neste's SAF. The fuel was produced in Normandy, close to Le Havre, France, and primarily consists of used cooking oil and other waste fats. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it is the first time an A380 has been powered by 100% SAF.
Emirates' commitment to sustainable aviation is not new. The airline received its first A380 powered by SAF in December 2020. Furthermore, it has been operating flights from Stockholm and Oslo on SAF, supported by Swedavia’s Biofuel Incentive Programme and the Norwegian government SAF mandate policy respectively. This pioneering flight is a significant step towards achieving the aviation industry's goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. It also underscores Emirates' commitment to leading the way in sustainable aviation, setting a precedent for other airlines to follow.
The successful operation of the Airbus A380 on 100% SAF paves the way for the future adoption of this sustainable fuel in commercial aviation. It is a testament to the industry's dedication to reducing its environmental impact and moving towards a more sustainable future.
