IATA argues that the resolution would harm the air transport industry in Brazil. The association says that the restriction would make it more difficult for passengers to connect to flights to other parts of the country and the world, and it would also make it more expensive to operate flights to Santos Dumont Airport.
"The resolution is a step backward for the air transport industry in Brazil," said Willie Walsh, IATA's Director General. "It will make it more difficult for passengers to travel, and it will make it more expensive for airlines to operate flights. We urge the Brazilian government to reconsider this resolution." The resolution is part of a broader effort by the Brazilian government to reduce air traffic congestion in Rio de Janeiro. The government has also announced plans to close down another airport in Rio de Janeiro, Jacarepaguá Airport. IATA says that the government should focus on improving the efficiency of the airports in Rio de Janeiro, rather than restricting flights. The association says that the government should invest in new runways and taxiways, and it should also improve the air traffic control system.
"The government should focus on making the airports in Rio de Janeiro more efficient," said Walsh. "This is the best way to reduce air traffic congestion and improve the experience for passengers." The Brazilian government has not yet responded to IATA's opposition to the resolution. The resolution is scheduled to take effect on January 2, 2024.
