Airbus and Neste to work together on global SAF development

Airbus has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Neste, a leading producer of renewable fuels, to jointly advance the production and uptake of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

The deal was signed on November 30, 2022, and aims to “accelerate the aviation sector’s transition to SAF,” Airbus said in a statement, and will focus on the technical development of low-emission jet fuel.

“Both parties share a vision that SAF is a key solution to helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions of air travel,” Airbus said.

“Neste and Airbus recognize that one of the biggest challenges in accelerating SAF use is the ramp-up of SAF production,” the European aerospace manufacturer added.

Julie Kitcher, the executive vice president of communications and corporate affairs at Airbus, confirmed that since SAF is currently recognized as one of the most promising solutions to decarbonize the aviation industry, all Airbus planes are already certified to operate with up to 50% SAF.

Kitcher said the partnership will be “instrumental to reaching certification for up to 100% SAF before the end of the decade.”

“The whole ecosystem is playing an essential role to ensure the increased uptake of SAF. Besides working on the technical aspects, Neste and Airbus will therefore investigate concrete SAF projects and business opportunities across the world with airlines and other stakeholders,” Airbus concluded.
