easyJet will launch 21 new routes and frequencies from Lisbon, becoming the UK’s largest carrier to Portugal for the winter 2022/23 season. With 32 routes to and from the capital to 10 countries, easyJet will become the second largest carrier at Lisbon based on capacity.
On Wednesday (July 27, 2022), easyJet announced the addition of 21 new routes and frequencies from Lisbon for the winter 2022/23 season, becoming the UK’s largest carrier to Portugal. In total, easyJet will operate 32 routes to and from the Portuguese capital to 10 countries, becoming Lisbon’s second largest airline based on capacity. Today’s announcement follows the allocation of 18 new slots for the airline at Lisbon Airport by the European Commission. easyJet will base three additional Airbus A321neos at the airport. In addition to 21 new routes and frequencies, the carrier will launch new twice-weekly service between Birmingham and Lisbon, with tickets available for sale from August 15, 2022.
In today’s announcment, easyJet’s Country Manager – Portugal, José Lopes, said,
“We are extremely glad to unveil part of easyJet's new network at Lisbon airport that will start operating later in 2022 and which will turn easyJet into the second largest carrier operating at Lisbon airport. We are particularly happy to be bringing the A321neo to Lisbon which will contribute to making our operations more sustainable.
“Despite the challenging external environment, we've never stopped investing in Portugal in the last two years, opening a new base In Faro in 2021 and continuously launching new routes from both Lisbon and Porto throughout the period. By the end of the year, we will have 19 aircraft based in Portugal which will enable us to carry more than 10 million passengers every year, contributing significantly to the connectivity of the country and playing a key role in supporting the national economy.”
This winter, easyJet will offer 1.75 million seats for sale to and from Lisbon, a 61 percent increase versus last year, and a network of over 80 routes to and from Portugal. Over the last 26 years, easyJet has carried around 69 million travelers to and from Portugal. The airline's capacity to and from Portugal has grown 51 percent compared to the pre-pandemic period (+69% in Lisbon, +69% in Oporto, +2% in Faro and +66% in Funchal). Additionally, easyJet has started new service to and from Porto Santo. easyJet's expansion in Portugal is expected to create around 130 new direct jobs, adding to the 500 easyJet team members already working in Portugal.
