NATO Picks Saab Bombardier GlobalEye in Historic AWACS Modernization Win

AeroNewsJournal

Brussels, April 24 - NATO has awarded the AWACS replacement contract to Saab and Bombardier, selecting the advanced GlobalEye platform to modernize the alliance's airborne early warning and control capabilities. According to French defense publication La Lettre, NATO’s Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) made the decision on April 21, 2026, opting for the Swedish-Canadian solution to replace the alliance's fleet of 14 aging Boeing E-3A Sentry aircraft. This multi-billion-euro program marks a significant milestone in NATO's efforts to enhance its surveillance and command systems amid evolving global security challenges. The partnership between Saab, known for its cutting-edge radar technology, and Bombardier, providing the reliable Global 6000/6500 business jet airframes, positions the GlobalEye as a cost-effective and highly capable successor in the competitive NATO AWACS replacement market.

The current NATO AWACS fleet, based primarily at Geilenkirchen in Germany, has served the alliance since the 1980s but faces mounting operational pressures. Aging airframes, increasing maintenance costs, and declining availability rates have necessitated an urgent modernization push for airborne early warning and control systems. Initial considerations favored Boeing's E-7 Wedgetail, but shifts in U.S. procurement priorities, including the cancellation of American E-7 plans, prompted a competitive relaunch in early 2026. Saab and Bombardier's offering emerged as the frontrunner, delivering a more agile, multi-domain surveillance solution tailored to NATO's requirements for contested environments. This NATO AWACS replacement initiative underscores the alliance's commitment to maintaining technological superiority while addressing sustainment challenges in high-intensity operations.

At the heart of the selection is Saab's GlobalEye system, which integrates the powerful Erieye ER radar with Bombardier's proven jet platform for exceptional performance. The aircraft offers 360-degree coverage, advanced electronic warfare resistance, and superior detection of aerial, maritime, and ground targets, even in complex electromagnetic spectra. Unlike larger traditional AWACS platforms, the GlobalEye emphasizes efficiency, lower operating costs, and rapid deployability, making it ideal for NATO's multinational crews and diverse mission profiles. Production and integration will leverage European and Canadian industrial expertise, fostering collaboration across member nations and potentially opening doors for additional procurements by countries like Germany, France, and others evaluating similar upgrades.

This strategic award represents a pivotal shift in NATO's defense procurement, moving away from long-standing U.S. dominance in airborne surveillance toward a more diversified, transatlantic partnership model. By choosing Saab and Bombardier for the AWACS replacement contract, the alliance not only secures enhanced capabilities for future threats but also promotes industrial resilience and innovation within Europe and beyond. As details of the program continue to unfold, stakeholders anticipate benefits in interoperability, cost savings, and operational readiness that will strengthen collective defense for decades. The decision highlights NATO's adaptability in an era of rapid technological advancement and geopolitical complexity.
