Dubai, Sept. 4 - Emirates, the Dubai-based airline renowned for its luxurious onboard experience, is significantly expanding its premium economy offering as part of an ambitious strategy to meet growing demand for enhanced travel experiences. By the end of 2025, the airline aims to provide over 2 million premium economy seats annually, up from its current 1.8 million, through the deployment of next-generation Airbus A350s and retrofitted Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s. This expansion focuses on key routes across the Middle East and West Asia, including Amman, Mumbai, Muscat, and Bahrain, with additional services to destinations like Kolkata, Malé, and Colombo. The move reflects Emirates’ commitment to offering a consistent and elevated travel experience, particularly for passengers connecting through its Dubai hub to over 68 cities, 36 of which will exclusively feature premium economy cabins by winter 2025. This strategic rollout is part of one of the largest fleet retrofit programs in aviation history, with 67 aircraft already refurbished and a goal to upgrade 219 planes, including 110 A380s and 109 Boeing 777s, at a rate of one aircraft every three weeks.

The premium economy cabin, introduced in 2022, has quickly gained acclaim for bridging the gap between standard economy and business class, offering a sophisticated yet affordable travel option. The seats, available on select A380s, Boeing 777s, and A350s, boast a generous 19.5-inch width, up to 40 inches of pitch, and an 8-inch recline, complemented by six-way adjustable headrests, calf rests, and footrests for enhanced comfort. Passengers enjoy a premium dining experience with regionally inspired dishes served on Royal Doulton china with stainless steel cutlery, accompanied by a curated selection of wines and beverages, including Chandon sparkling wine. Additional amenities include a 13.3-inch HD in-flight entertainment screen, in-seat charging ports, and a 35kg checked baggage allowance, 10kg more than standard economy. On A380s, the premium economy cabin is strategically located at the front of the lower deck, allowing faster disembarkation, which is particularly beneficial for passengers with tight connections.
Specific route enhancements underscore Emirates’ focus on regional connectivity and passenger comfort. Starting October 26, 2025, Amman’s EK903/904 flights will operate daily with a four-class A380 featuring refreshed interiors, including premium economy. Mumbai will see a retrofitted Boeing 777 on EK504/505, offering the upgraded cabin on 22 weekly flights from the same date. Muscat will benefit from the Airbus A350 on all nine weekly flights starting October 30, with EK862/863 services on Thursdays and Saturdays showcasing the latest cabin design. Bahrain will become the first Gulf destination exclusively served by aircraft with premium economy and refreshed business class cabins, with a retrofitted Boeing 777 introduced on EK833/834 every Thursday from December 4. Additionally, Emirates has expanded premium economy to leisure destinations like Malé, with three daily flights on retrofitted Boeing 777s, and Colombo, where a second daily flight (EK650/651) features the upgraded cabin from July 18, 2025.
This expansion is driven by Emirates’ response to surging demand for premium travel, reinforced by its record-breaking $5.8 billion profit for the financial year ending March 31, 2025. The retrofit program, valued at $5 billion, not only upgrades cabins but also ensures a consistent experience across Emirates’ global network, particularly for passengers connecting through Dubai. By winter 2025, premium economy will be available on over 635 weekly flights, covering destinations like London Heathrow, New York JFK, Sydney, and Tokyo Haneda, among others. The cabin’s design, inspired by Emirates’ business class with cream-colored leather seats and wood-grain accents, delivers a luxurious yet accessible experience. As Emirates continues to roll out these enhancements, it solidifies its position as a leader in premium air travel, offering passengers a compelling alternative that balances comfort and value.
