American Airlines Reveals Many Travellers Avoid Newark Airport


Texas, May 26 - American Airlines has recently addressed ongoing operational challenges at Newark Liberty International Airport, a major hub in the New York metropolitan area that has faced significant disruptions due to air traffic control issues, staffing shortages, and runway construction. The airline, which holds a modest 4% market share at Newark according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, has acknowledged that some travelers are opting for alternative airports in the region, such as LaGuardia or John F. Kennedy International, to avoid delays. However, the company emphasized that the impact on its broader network remains minimal, given its relatively small presence at Newark compared to competitors like United Airlines, which dominates nearly 70% of the airport’s flight operations.

The situation at Newark has been tumultuous, with a series of air traffic control outages and staffing shortages causing widespread delays and cancellations. Since late April 2025, the airport has experienced multiple telecommunications and radar failures, including a significant incident on April 28 that disrupted flight schedules and led to diversions. These issues, compounded by ongoing runway construction, prompted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to impose temporary flight restrictions, capping operations at 28 arrivals and 28 departures per hour until mid-June, with plans to increase to 34 per hour through October when construction pauses. American Airlines and other carriers like Delta, JetBlue, and Alaska have committed to supporting these FAA-mandated reductions to alleviate congestion and improve operational reliability.

The airline has also taken steps to enhance the passenger experience at Newark, recently unveiling a new 25,000-square-foot Admirals Club lounge in the A-West Terminal, designed with modern amenities to improve comfort and productivity for travelers.
