New service at BER – facial recognition replaces boarding pass

Berlin Brandenburg Airport is introducing BER Traveller, a digital service for biometric access control. HON Circle Members and Senators of Lufthansa Group Airlines, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings can enjoy the new service, which requires a one-time registration of their biometric data in the service provider’s app, FastID.

The service is initially aimed exclusively at Lufthansa Group Airlines’ HON Circle Members and Senators, and the next step will be making the use of BER’s self-service machines, boarding at the gate and access to the Lufthansa Group Lounge possible via facial recognition.

Heike Birlenbach, Head of Customer Experience, Lufthansa Group, and Thomas Hoff Anderson, Chief Operations Officer, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, are pleased to have persuaded the Lufthansa Group of the potential of facial recognition for smarter passenger processes at BER. The use of the new biometric service at BER Airport is completely voluntary, with personal and biometric data stored decentrally in the passenger's app.

After the flight, the data is deleted from FastID and remains solely in the passenger's app. Verification at the process points is carried out by taking photos using permanently installed cameras and matching the photos with the biometric passenger data from the app. Albert van Veen, Managing Director of FastID, believes that the implementation at BER Airport represents a new era of identity control in travel, giving individuals control over their own data.
