Amsterdam, July 12 - The Netherlands has announced a significant military deployment aimed at bolstering NATO's eastern flank and ensuring the secure delivery of aid to Ukraine. From September 1 to December 1, 2025, Dutch F-35 fighter jets will be stationed in Poland to patrol NATO airspace, focusing on protecting critical supply routes that facilitate the transfer of military equipment and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. This operation, conducted in close coordination with Norway, which will also deploy its own F-35s, underscores NATO's commitment to deterring Russian aggression and maintaining regional stability in Eastern Europe. The deployment was initiated at the request of NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), the alliance’s central command in Europe, highlighting the strategic importance of the mission.

The Dutch F-35s, alongside their Norwegian counterparts, will operate as part of NATO’s Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) system, maintaining a 24-hour readiness to respond to potential airspace violations. This rapid-response posture is designed to counter any threats to NATO territory, particularly in light of increased Russian aerial maneuvers in the region. Poland, located just 80 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, serves as a key logistics hub, with Rzeszów Airport acting as a primary transit point for Western-supplied equipment and aid since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022. The presence of advanced fifth-generation F-35 jets, known for their stealth capabilities, sensor fusion, and network-centric warfare, enhances NATO’s ability to secure these vital corridors and deter potential incursions.
The Netherlands’ decision to deploy F-35s reflects a broader trend among NATO allies to strengthen air defenses along the alliance’s eastern borders. The mission follows Norway’s earlier commitment to deploy its F-35s to Poland, as well as the stationing of Norwegian NASAMS air defense systems in Rzeszów since December 2024. These combined efforts aim to create a robust defense network, ensuring that military assistance reaches Ukraine without disruption. The F-35s, operating under direct NATO command, will work as a joint detachment, with the Netherlands and Norway sharing personnel and material resources to maximize operational efficiency. This multinational framework not only enhances deterrence but also signals to Moscow that NATO is unified in its resolve to protect its members and support Ukraine.
This deployment marks a significant step in the Netherlands’ ongoing support for Ukraine, building on its earlier contributions, such as the completed transfer of 24 F-16 jets to the Ukrainian Air Force by May 2025. The transition to F-35s, which are replacing older F-16 fleets across several NATO countries, underscores the alliance’s modernization efforts. The F-35’s advanced capabilities, including stealth and electronic warfare, make it uniquely suited for the complex missions required in this volatile region. By deploying these jets, the Netherlands is reinforcing NATO’s strategic posture while contributing to the broader goal of ensuring the safe transit of critical supplies to Ukraine, thereby supporting its defense against Russian aggression.
