
In a tragic incident, a small passenger plane crashed in Brazil's Amazon rainforest on September 17, 2023, killing all 14 people on board. The victims included 12 passengers and two crew members.

The Incident
The Embraer PT-SOG aircraft had taken off from Manaus, the Amazonas state capital and the largest city in the Amazon, and was attempting to land in heavy rain when it crashed. The passengers were Brazilian tourists on their way to fish. The plane crash occurred in Barcelos province, about 250 miles (400km) from the state capital, Manaus.

The Aftermath
The main wreckage was found on a muddy dirt track with the front part of the aircraft in green foliage. A couple of dozen people were seen standing nearby holding umbrellas. The Brazilian Air Force sent a team from Manaus to collect information and preserve any evidence that could be used for the investigation into the crash.
Investigation
According to Amazonas state security secretary Vinicius Almeida, the small plane's pilot was approaching the town in heavy rain, with low visibility, and appeared to inadvertently start his landing mid-runway. The plane ran out of the landing strip and crashed.
