Special forces scrambled to a Jet2 aircraft after claims of explosive device on board

On August 22, 2023, armed officers rushed to a Jet2 plane at East Midlands Airport, UK after a passenger claimed to have an ‘explosive device’. The aircraft was on the ground at the time of the incident and officers worked with airport staff and with the aircraft crew to provide an immediate response to the report.

In the interests of public and officer safety, armed officers were also deployed to the area of the aircraft. Following instruction, the man safely left the aircraft where he was arrested on suspicion of possession of an explosive substance.

The aircraft has been fully searched and no explosive device has been found onboard. There is no suggestion that the threat made is viable. The flight was due to take off at 4.45pm but eventually left the airport at 8.15pm.

The man arrested has since been released on bail, but inquiries remain ongoing. This incident highlights the importance of security measures in airports and the swift response of authorities in ensuring the safety of passengers and crew. It serves as a reminder that threats, even if not viable, are taken seriously and dealt with appropriately.
