On December 21, 1988, the world's largest aircraft, Antonov An-225, known as "Mriya" performed its maiden flight. The aircraft was made of only one copy. The plane was primarily built to carry the Soviet space shuttle. The aircraft was designed by Antonov Design Bureau in Ukraine, which was part of the former Soviet Union. The heaviest and largest aircraft in the world is powered by six jet engines, with a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 640 tons. The wingspan is 88.4 meters, and a flight crew of 6 pilots. An-225 design was developed from the An-124.
