Singapore, July 18 - The biennial multinational military exercise Talisman Sabre, hosted primarily in northern and eastern Australia, marked a significant milestone with the debut participation of Singapore’s military and advanced U.S. intelligence-gathering aircraft. This large-scale exercise, which began in 2005 as a joint U.S.-Australia initiative, has grown into one of the most sophisticated warfighting drills in the Indo-Pacific, involving over 35,000 personnel from 19 nations, including Canada, Fiji, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, Tonga, and the United Kingdom, with Malaysia and Vietnam as observers. Running from July 13 to August 4, 2025, the exercise spans multiple domains—land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace—across locations such as Queensland, the Northern Territory, Western Australia, New South Wales, Christmas Island, and, for the first time, Papua New Guinea.

Singapore’s participation in Talisman Sabre 2025 underscores its growing role in regional security cooperation. The Singapore Armed Forces deployed two M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers and two Boeing CH-47F Chinook helicopters, marking their first involvement in this high-profile exercise. The HIMARS, known for their precision and mobility, were integrated into a multinational live-fire exercise on July 14 alongside Australian and U.S. units, demonstrating Singapore’s capability to operate within a complex coalition framework. The CH-47F Chinooks, heavy-lift helicopters, provided critical support for troop and equipment movement, showcasing Singapore’s advanced logistical capabilities. This debut highlights Singapore’s strategic intent to enhance interoperability with allied forces, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, where its advanced military technology and strategic position make it a valuable partner.
Equally notable was the first-time deployment of U.S. intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft to Talisman Sabre. The U.S. Air Force contributed an RC-135W Rivet Joint from the 55th Wing, based at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, while the U.S. Navy deployed a P-8A Poseidon equipped with specialized ISR and communications suites. These platforms brought exceptional signals intelligence and electronic intelligence capabilities, enhancing the exercise’s focus on multi-domain operations. The RC-135W, designed for electronic surveillance, collects and analyzes signals to provide real-time intelligence, while the P-8A Poseidon, primarily a maritime patrol aircraft, added anti-submarine and surface search capabilities alongside robust data-sharing systems. Their participation reflects the increasing emphasis on intelligence-driven operations in the Indo-Pacific, where real-time situational awareness is critical for addressing potential regional contingencies. Talisman Sabre 2025 featured a range of activities, including amphibious landings, live-fire exercises, ground force maneuvers, air combat, and maritime operations, all designed to strengthen interoperability and readiness among participating nations. The inclusion of Singapore’s HIMARS and Chinooks, alongside U.S. ISR assets, underscores the exercise’s role in fostering coalition capabilities to address complex security challenges.
The multinational live-fire exercise, involving HIMARS units from Australia, the U.S., and Singapore, demonstrated seamless coordination in high-intensity scenarios. Additionally, the exercise’s expansion to Papua New Guinea signifies deepening defense ties in the region, with joint activities planned in Wewak, Madang, and Lae, culminating in a closing ceremony at Igam Barracks. The participation of Singapore and the U.S. ISR aircraft in Talisman Sabre 2025 highlights the evolving nature of military cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. For Singapore, it is an opportunity to showcase its advanced military capabilities and strengthen ties with regional and global partners. For the U.S., the deployment of sophisticated intelligence platforms reinforces its commitment to enhancing coalition readiness and maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific. As the largest iteration of Talisman Sabre to date, the exercise serves as a powerful demonstration of collective resolve and interoperability, preparing allied forces for a wide array of potential security scenarios while fostering strategic partnerships in an increasingly dynamic region.
