Boeing’s new Kuala Lumpur office is designed to serve as a pivotal hub for enhancing customer support, aviation safety, sustainability initiatives, and supply chain development in Malaysia, one of the largest aviation markets in the Asia-Pacific region. Penny Burtt, president of Boeing Southeast Asia, emphasized the company’s long-standing partnership with Malaysia, which spans over seven decades, beginning with delivering the Douglas DC-3 aircraft to Malayan Airways Limited in 1947. Since then, Boeing has delivered more than 140 aircraft to Malaysian carriers, including over 100 Boeing 737s to Malaysia Airlines, significantly contributing to the nation’s aviation growth. The new office reflects Boeing’s dedication to fostering innovation, expanding local partnerships, and supporting Malaysia’s industrial and economic ambitions under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), which identifies aerospace as a priority sector to drive innovation and achieve net-zero ambitions.
Beyond aircraft sales, Boeing’s presence in Malaysia includes its sole wholly-owned manufacturing facility in Southeast Asia, located in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah. Known as Boeing Composites Malaysia, this facility employs nearly 1,000 Malaysians and produces high-quality composite parts for Boeing’s 737, 767, 777, and 787 aircraft programs, integrating Malaysia into the company’s global production network. This manufacturing hub exemplifies Boeing’s commitment to creating high-value jobs and fostering technological expertise in the region. Additionally, Boeing has invested in community initiatives, such as a recent RM44,000 higher education grant to the Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara in Jitra, Kedah, to train 30 students in machining technology and fabrication, paving the way for future employment opportunities in the aerospace industry.
Boeing’s expanded presence aligns with Malaysia’s strategic geographic position, robust industrial ecosystem, and stable talent supply, positioning the country as an ideal aerospace hub. The Malaysia Aviation Group’s recent announcement to purchase 30 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, with an option for 30 more, further strengthens this collaboration, offering opportunities for local supply chain expansion, talent upskilling, and sustainability leadership. As Malaysia aims to generate RM55.2 billion in annual revenue and create 32,000 high-income jobs by 2030 through its aerospace blueprint, Boeing’s new office in Kuala Lumpur signals a shared commitment to driving innovation and economic complexity, solidifying Malaysia’s role as a regional aerospace powerhouse.
