
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has recently made a significant strategic move by leasing two of its valuable London Heathrow Airport slots to Saudi Airlines (Saudia) for the Summer 2025 season. The agreement involves PIA formally requesting Airport Coordination Limited (ACL), the global airport slot coordinator, to allow a slot swap. Under this arrangement, PIA will lease its slots from April 5 to October 25, 2025, to Saudia. These slots were previously held by Vietnam Airlines, whose lease on them ends in early April 2025. The slots in question are for arrival at 13:35 and departure at 16:00, typically serviced by PIA's Boeing 777 aircraft with 393 seats. Saudia, on the other hand, will utilize these slots with its Boeing 787-9 aircraft, which has a capacity of 289 seats, for its service between London Heathrow and Riyadh. This strategic leasing is not merely a financial decision but a move to ensure that PIA's slots at one of the world's busiest airports are not lost due to underutilization. Since PIA has been barred from operating in UK and US airspace due to safety concerns raised by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in 2020, the airline has had to creatively manage its assets. The ban was a consequence of an investigation into the South Asian country’s aviation safety standards following a tragic crash and pilot license irregularities. Although EASA lifted the ban in November 2024, and PIA has resumed some of its European operations, the airline still faces restrictions in certain markets like the UK.
In response, PIA adopted what they've termed a "babysitting option" for their slots, leasing them to airlines like Turkish Airlines, Saudia, and Vietnam Airlines. This not only helps in retaining these slots but also allows PIA to maintain a presence in crucial markets indirectly. The slots at London Heathrow are particularly significant due to the airport's status and the high demand for landing rights there, which are governed by stringent "use-it-or-lose-it" rules. This latest agreement with Saudia for the 2025 summer season will see Saudia's flight SV108 arriving at London Heathrow at 23:00 and departing as SV109 at 23:05.
