The Dutch government has recently made a significant decision regarding the sale of F-16 fighter jets. They have halted negotiations with Draken International, a private military aircraft operator, for the sale of six F-16 fighter jets. This decision was announced by Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren and State Secretary Christophe van der Maat.

The negotiations were initially started when Draken International showed interest in purchasing 12 F-16s from the Netherlands. The aim was to strengthen the contractor’s fleet with fourth-generation fighters, enabling the company to participate actively in competitive orders and tenders. However, the proposed sale did not take place, leading to a revised offer from the Netherlands to sell six F-16s to Draken. The decision to halt the sale came after both parties agreed that the sale and delivery of these aircraft would no longer proceed. Instead, the Dutch government has decided to allocate the six aircraft initially earmarked for potential sale to Ukraine. This addition will bring the total number of Dutch aircraft to be handed over to Ukraine to 24.
The move is part of a larger European effort to provide Ukraine with F-16 capabilities. The Netherlands, along with Denmark, is leading this initiative. In November, the first of 18 aircraft were sent to Romania for pilot training. The planned transfer of jets will replace losses Ukraine has suffered in its war with Russia, as well as provide more powerful radar and integration with NATO-standard weapon systems. The F-16s being prepared for handover to Ukraine are still in use by the Netherlands Royal Air Force. The 18 aircraft being provided for training will remain the property of the Netherlands. Of those aircraft, five are already in Romania, with the remainder to follow by the end of June.
