Emirates to deploy A350 to Adelaide, confirming its commitment to Australia

Emirates, the Dubai-based airline, has announced its plans to introduce its Airbus A350 fleet to Australia, starting with Adelaide. This exciting development is set to take place in mid-2024.

A New Era for Emirates

The introduction of the Airbus A350 marks a significant milestone for Emirates. Since retiring its last A330 in 2016, Emirates has relied solely on two widebody aircraft, the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 families, to support its extensive route network. However, the introduction of the A350-900 in 2024 will mark the end of this eight-year dual operation. Emirates expects to take delivery of its first A350s in the middle of 2024. The carrier has a firm order for up to 50 A350 aircraft from Airbus. The specific launch destination has not yet been confirmed, although Adelaide has been revealed as one of the destinations.

Commitment to Australia

Emirates' decision to introduce nonstop services to Adelaide aligns with its commitment to expand and improve connectivity options for travelers in Australia. The airline's Australian chief, Barry Brown, expressed excitement about returning to Adelaide and playing a key role in South Australians' international travel plans. In addition to Adelaide, Darwin has also been cited as a potential A350 route by Emirates President Sir Tim Clark. While Darwin may not be as robust as Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, Clark believes that there is potential for growth and that the mid-sized A350 would be well-suited to serve markets like Darwin.

Looking Ahead

With the upcoming delivery of the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in 2025, Emirates is set to further expand its reach to destinations with lower demand and complement its already impressive list of destinations². This expansion will facilitate further growth of the airline's global network by allowing its fleet to grow and freeing up more of Emirates’ long-range aircraft to serve points like Adelaide.
