British Airways has launched a groundbreaking initiative to make pilot training more accessible. The airline has opened applications for its fully-funded pilot training scheme, the Speedbird Pilot Academy. This program aims to cover the total training cost of up to 60 recruits every year.

The Speedbird Pilot Academy
The Speedbird Pilot Academy is a fully funded training scheme for up to 60 successful candidates working with selected Flight Training organizations. Applications for the academy opened in September 2023, with training planned to start in 2024. Once training is complete, cadets can expect to earn a starting salary of approximately £34,000 per year, plus allowances.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet certain requirements including having at least six GCSEs, meeting physical requirements, and passing a medical exam. More specifically, applicants need 6 GCSEs (or equivalent), Grades A-C or 5-9 (including English, Maths, and one of the Sciences). Your height must be between 1.57m (5'2") and 1.90m (6'3"). Height is accurately determined during the assessment process.
Focus on Diversity
Creating a diverse group of pilots is essential to British Airways. The airline is working with Fantasy Wings to promote the training opportunity to people from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, other communities, and young women.
