

A Delta Airlines flight, DL-185, operated with Boeing 767-300 (Reg. N189DN), was en route from Milan Malpensa, Italy to New York JFK, USA when it experienced severe turbulence and hail while ascending from runway 35R.

The crew declared an emergency due to turbulence, hail, and a cracked windshield. They halted their ascent at FL230 and rerouted to Rome Fiumicino, Italy. The plane landed on runway 16R without any further issues approximately 65 minutes after takeoff.
No one was injured, but the aircraft suffered significant damage including punctures in the right wing and both engine spinners, damage to the fan blades of both engines, a punctured radome, and dents along the wings' leading edges.
