Egypt Is Seen As A Potential Hub for SAF Production

Egypt has the potential to become a major participant in the Middle East and North Africa's SAF sector.

According to Egypt's local newspaper, Ahram Online, US firms participating in the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Workshop have recognized Egypt as a good contender for building a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) center in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) area. Keith Kirkham, Minister Counsellor of Commercial Affairs at the US Embassy in Cairo stated that The demand for SAF is now exceeding the available supply, indicating that this gap will remain in the medium term and beyond.

Kirkham claims that US firms are actively pursuing various routes of partnership with Egypt in the field of SAF manufacture. He highlighted that these firms are keen to form alliances with both Egypt's business and public sectors in order to push SAF efforts.

Egypt has the potential to become a major producer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Africa and the Middle East. This is according to Ahmed Mattar, Director of Fuel and Emission at EgyptAir, who reiterated the thoughts of Kirkham. Mattar added that SAF production is in line with Egypt's 2030 sustainable development strategy.

Egypt's flag carrier, Egyptair, operated its very first commercial flight using SAF in 2022 to confirm its commitment to reducing carbon emissions in aviation. The flight was from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to Sharm El Sheikh Airport transporting delegates to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27). The flight was operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
